Liza Mermelstein, PhD

Co-Founder, Third Wave Psychotherapy

Liza Mermelstein Third Wave PsychotherapyI am a licensed clinical psychologist providing therapy for adults and adolescents (ages 16+). My work is grounded in third-wave behavioral therapies, including Mindfulness-Based Treatments and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These evidence-based approaches support the development of psychological flexibility—the ability to stay present with difficult thoughts and emotions while making choices that align with personal values.

Mindfulness is central to my approach. It involves intentionally turning toward the present moment with openness, curiosity, and compassion, rather than avoidance or judgment. Practicing mindfulness helps us move out of automatic, reactive patterns and into a more spacious, aware relationship with our inner experience and the world around us. It allows us to observe thoughts and emotions without being swept away by them, creating space to respond with greater intention. Over time, this practice fosters emotional resilience, greater flexibility, and a deeper connection to what truly matters.

I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD (including using Exposure and Response Prevention), mood disorders, life transitions, insomnia, and parenting challenges.  My goal is to work with you to identify patterns of thinking and behavior that may be contributing to current struggles, and to cultivate new ways of relating to thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

In addition to individual therapy, I also lead mindfulness-based groups that offer a supportive space for building skills in present-moment awareness, emotional regulation, and connection. I’ve been facilitating groups for over 15 years in a variety of settings, and find group work to be a powerful way to deepen connection, take healthy risks, and practice new skills. Over the past five years, I’ve been involved in a grant-funded study through the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, providing Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention to incarcerated women. I hope to continue to grow our group program at Third Wave Psychotherapy.

My therapeutic style is collaborative, compassionate, and focused on practical, lasting change. I strive to create a space that is supportive, nonjudgmental, and inclusive—where individuals feel seen, respected, and empowered. I’m committed to culturally responsive care that honors each person’s unique identity, values, and background.

I received my undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and completed my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Ohio UniversityMy clinical training includes a predoctoral internship at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. I moved to Albuquerque in 2015 and joined Behavior Therapy Associates, first as an associate and later as a partner in the practice.

Co-founding Third Wave Psychotherapy with my colleague Rae Littlewood has been a long-held vision. Together, we’ve spent years developing a practice that reflects our shared values and therapeutic approach. We intend to create a space that not only supports client growth, but also fosters community, authenticity, and ongoing learning for both clients and clinicians.
